Genre

A categories of writing

Genre is the categories of writing. In Engl 11000 with Professor Carr, there were different categories of writing that we used such Expository writing which is a writing type used to give detailed information about a topic. Argumentative writing which is when one takes a stance on a topic. These two are one of the main genres of papers we had to write.

In the Expository writing, we had to write about a topic and give detailed information on that topic because eventually, that can turn into a bigger paper where you have to incorporate it along with another genre of writing. And that is exactly what happens in an Argumentative Essay.

In an Argumentative essay, you have to take a stance on a topic, give background information as well as argue your point. And this is where the expository writing comes in. As you are arguing your stance, you need to have evidence and a lot of details to support it. So knowing how to write an expository essay is very helpful.

In class, we analyzed argumentative genre writing by other students before us. Where we identified what the thesis of the paper was, the evidence to support it, the stance of the author and the lessons/take-aways from the work. This exercise made me to see what to add to mine work to make it better and what to take out to make it even more better.
